It is important to know what bone marrow is. Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue, which makes the blood-forming cells inside the bones. There are white blood cells to fight infections, red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body, and platelets to control the bleeding. In the bloodstream and the umbilical cord blood, the blood-forming cells are also found. Bone marrow is the primary site of new blood cell production in birds and mammals. Hematopoietic cells, marrow adipose tissue, and supportive stromal cells are the composing elements of the bone marrow. 500 billion blood cells are being produced per day in the human body.

•          When is bone marrow transplantation needed

One may require the transplantation of the unhealthy tissues with fresh ones due to cancer or blood diseases. Severe diseases of the bone marrow can be treated by using these transplants. The blood cells in the bone marrow carry oxygen to different parts of the body. In some bone marrow diseases, the process of creating new blood cells by the stem cells is prevented. So the bone marrow transplantation is really needed.

•          How does this process work?

In order to destroy the diseased blood-forming cells and marrow, one gets chemotherapy with or without radiation before this transplantation process. New cells are being transplanted with the diseased ones. It is not actually a surgery. Through an intravenous line, or tube the new cells go into our bloodstream. Like getting blood or medicine it goes in our body through an intravenous line. The cells find their own path and later on grow and make healthy blood cells including white cells, red cells, and platelets. One has to confirm the cost of bone marrow transplant from the concerned doctors.

The bone marrow transplant can treat several diseases like blood cancers like leukemia or lymphoma, bone marrow diseases like aplastic anemia, other immune system or genetic diseases. There are three common types of bone marrow transplant available in the market. In Autologous transplant our own blood-forming cells are being used. In case of allogeneic transplant, someone else’s donated blood-forming cells are being used. At last haploidentical transplant is a type of allogeneic transplant. The allogeneic transplantation which is done by using donated blood cells conducted for the treatment of severe bone marrow diseases like congenital defects, autoimmune diseases or malignancies.

By using drugs or radiation patient’s own marrow is being killed. Sometimes the stem cells are harvested during the chemotherapy processes. In order to restore the immune system, these cells are infused back when the therapy is completed. When someone is undergoing the process it is very necessary to consult with the doctors. The doctors can confirm the price of bone marrow transplant in India. Several tests are required before anyone comes to the conclusion. Biopsy report is very necessary for the cancer patients because it will show all the possibilities regarding this. The recovery in case of bone marrow transplantation is slow. One has to take the quality amount of rest before getting back to work.
